{"id":405,"date":"2014-07-25T14:46:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-25T14:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.closetsbydesign.com\/?p=405"},"modified":"2020-07-14T16:13:48","modified_gmt":"2020-07-14T23:13:48","slug":"tips-for-summer-cleaning-and-getting-your-home-organized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.closetsbydesign.com\/tips-for-summer-cleaning-and-getting-your-home-organized\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for &#8220;Summer Cleaning&#8221; and Getting Your Home Organized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Summer is a great time to tackle any Spring cleaning you didn\u2019t get to in the Spring!<\/p>\n<p>There is something cathartic about organizing and refreshing your home, opening up the windows and letting in fresh air and sunshine and cleaning the cobwebs out of all the corners.<\/p>\n<p>If the word &#8220;cleaning&#8221; doesn\u2019t appeal to you, try to think of it as one cleaning diva: &#8220;an opportunity to recharge the existing beauty of your home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Making the Most of Your Time<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.closetsbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Cleaning-under-couch-closets-by-design-e1406324906695-239x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17485 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.closetsbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Cleaning-under-couch-closets-by-design-e1406324906695-239x300-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Start with a plan. Work either room by room or task by task but do have a planned attack or the job will overwhelm you. You don\u2019t want to put in a day\u2019s cleaning and feel like you haven\u2019t accomplished anything. Designate a few donation boxes so you can readily assemble items you want to donate or sell at a garage sale.<\/p>\n<p>You also want to consider the order of the chores. For example, you don\u2019t want to dust off the ceiling fan <em>after<\/em> you\u2019ve dusted all the furniture that sits below it.<\/p>\n<p>Setting aside specific jobs like cleaning the oven or emptying closets for the moment, here are the essentials for every room in your home:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wipe down walls for dust and cobwebs, wash smudges, spackle nail holes and apply touch up paint<\/li>\n<li>Wash baseboards, handrails, doors, doorknobs and switch plates<\/li>\n<li>Dust light fixtures, light bulbs and ceiling fan blades<\/li>\n<li>Move furniture (including refrigerator)and vacuum\/mop floor underneath before returning to its place<\/li>\n<li>Wash any vent covers, then wax vents with car wax to slow dust buildup<\/li>\n<li>Replace filters as needed for fans or furnace<\/li>\n<li>Sweep or vacuum and wash all floors, stairs and hallways<\/li>\n<li>Polish mirrors, dust TV and computer screens and monitors<\/li>\n<li>Dust blinds, wash windows and window sills, inside and out; wash screens<\/li>\n<li>Launder curtains, throw rugs and (washable) upholstered cushions and pillows<\/li>\n<li>Vacuum sofa, chairs, ottomans or other upholstered furniture<\/li>\n<li>Dust all knick knacks, art objects and displays<\/li>\n<li>Dust furniture and, where appropriate, use furniture oil or stain to cover scratches<\/li>\n<li>Replace batteries in carbon monoxide and smoke detectors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Room-specific Cleaning and Organizing<\/h2>\n<p>Your <strong>kitchen<\/strong> is probably the most used room in the house, yet may get overlooked for deep cleaning. In addition to the daily maintenance, here are some deep cleaning extras:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clean oven, stove top and microwave<\/li>\n<li>Clean refrigerator, throwing out any expired or unrecognizable items<\/li>\n<li>Empty all cabinets, dust and wash down shelves and drawers before replacing anything<\/li>\n<li>Discard and replace any expired spices or foods<\/li>\n<li>Sort dishes and pans and toss out or donate any duplicates, non-working appliances, or pieces you no longer use<\/li>\n<li>Clear off counters and scrub counter tops, back splash, faucets, cabinet fronts and knobs<\/li>\n<li>Clean and reseal grout lines if necessary<\/li>\n<li>Vacuum refrigerator coils<\/li>\n<li>Take stock of household cleaning supplies and replenish your supply<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.closetsbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bathroom-cleaning-closets-by-design-300x198.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17486 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.closetsbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bathroom-cleaning-closets-by-design-300x198-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><strong>Bathrooms<\/strong> run a close second for daily maintenance but always need deep cleaning too:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Empty all cabinets and vanity, dust and wash shelves and drawers<\/li>\n<li>Replace outdated medications or cosmetics<\/li>\n<li>Scrub tub, shower, toilet and all fixtures<\/li>\n<li>Clean and reseal any damaged or stained grout<\/li>\n<li>Clean drains<\/li>\n<li>New towels and rugs to brighten it up<\/li>\n<li>Repaint if needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>laundry room<\/strong> can easily become disorganized and out of control. While &#8220;summer cleaning&#8221; you may want to institute some organizational steps as well to control the clutter.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wash both outside and inside of washer and dryer<\/li>\n<li>Clean lint trap (should be done on a regular basis, not just Spring)<\/li>\n<li>Clean drains and laundry sink<\/li>\n<li>Scrub counter tops and replace items that belong<\/li>\n<li>Purchase hampers for sorting laundry<\/li>\n<li>Empty and wash out any cabinets or drawers<\/li>\n<li>Sort supplies and replace what you need, discard old or unused items<\/li>\n<li>Buy new hangers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Closets<\/strong> are in foyers, living rooms, bedrooms and hallways.
